
Dr. Miki Sugimura is a professor in the Department of Education of the Faculty of Human Sciences at Sophia University, specializing in comparative and international education focusing on Asia, and multicultural education. After graduating from the Faculty of Education at Ochanomizu University in 1985, she received an M.Ed. and Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. She became a teacher in the Department of Education at Sophia University in 2002. She served as Vice President for Global Academic Affairs of Sophia University from 2014-2021. From 2016 to 2022, she was the chair of the Education Sub-Committee of the National Commission for UNESCO, and from 2017 to 2023, she was the president of the Japan Comparative Education Society. In 2022, she was selected as an international expert member for the revision of UNESCO's 1974 Recommendation. Since 2020, she has been the vice-chair of the Promotion of Sustainability in Postgraduate Education and Research, and since 2021, she has been a visiting professor at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Studies of Sustainability. She is currently conducting research on multicultural education, including education for international students, immigrants, refugees, and foreign workers, as well as research on international cooperation in education and international higher education. The term of office for the President of Sophia University is four years, starting in April 2025. This is the first time a woman has been appointed President of the university since its founding in 1913.
